Jake Autism & Me
Hi everyone, today i wanted to talk to you about living with autism and mental health issues like depression and other conditions that are not visible to other people but conditions that affect certain peoples lives.
In the summer of 2012, just before secondary school, i was diagnosed with autism asperger syndrome which means my brain works slightly differently to how others think. This means that sometimes my communication will not be as good as other people.
Since a few years ago, a company called the sunflower lanyard scheme brought out a green lanyard with sunflowers on and this is to show people that i have a hidden disability so that i can get the support that i feel i need.
i really want to show people that even though i have autism, it doesn't mean i am different to other young people and thats what i want to show other young people with autism, ADHD, depression and other conditions.just because you have a condition, doesn't make you different to anyone else, you are incredibly special to your community, your family and friends or loved ones.
a frequent question i get asked is what is a hidden disability and what does it mean to be autistic, the honest answer to people who are interested is that a hidden disability is a mental condition rather than a physical one and to be autistic means you think a little bit differently to everyone else. It also means that you may need a little bit of extra support and guidance than some people, but that is okay :) that is what the lanyard is there to do, its to show people that you do need a little bit of extra support every now and again
Do make sure you talk about how you feel though, it is so so important to say how you feel especially if you have a hidden disability like i do so that people know how to support you. Please do make use of the sunflower lanyard, it is so helpful so please do invest in one. Please do reach out for support if you feel that you need it.
